Resumen

Descripción
English: Sketch of San Juan Bay and its surrounding land in Puerto Rico, created by Rodrigo de Figueroa in 1519 to illustrate the moving of the capital city from the southern side of the Bay to the islet in the northern side of the Bay.

The circle in the bottom corner reads: "aquí es la ciudad de puerto rico" (here is the city of Puerto Rico). It marks the location of the first European settlement in Puerto Rico, established by Juan Ponce de León in 1508. Upon its founding, it was named "Villa de Caparra" or simply "Caparra," after the Ancient Roman city of Cáparra, which lies to the immediate north of Cáceres in Extremadura, the hometown of Ponce de León’s superior, Nicolás de Ovando. However, the settlement was renamed "Ciudad de Puerto Rico" or simply "Puerto Rico" by 1513.

The islet in the upper center reads in part: "aquí a de ser la ciudad" (here is to be the city). It marks the location where the original city was officially moved to in 1521 under the name of "Ciudad de San Juan Bautista de Puerto Rico," also simply "San Juan Bautista de Puerto Rico," "San Juan de Puerto Rico," or "Puerto Rico." "San Juan Bautista" is the name Christopher Columbus gave to main island of Puerto Rico upon discovery and landing during his second voyage on November 19, 1493. The Spanish colonial capital city of Puerto Rico remained in the islet, and it comprises today the historic district of Old San Juan in the capital municipality of Puerto Rico.
